A Strategic HRM project
Strategic HRM
Context
Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, Washington, United States, is one of the oldest continuously
operated public farmers’ markets in the United States. Founded in 1907, it was established to
provide a direct link between farmers and consumers, cutting out the middleman and ensuring
fair prices for both. It’s not just a market; it’s an iconic landmark and a major tourist attraction in
Seattle. It is well known for its tradition of fishmongers throwing the fish purchased by
customers prior to wrapping it. The fish market was near to bankruptcy in 1986, but after the
introduction of new practices such as the fish throwing, games, and customer performances, it
received significant exposure in national media and on television shows. Pike Place Fish Market
is today a world-famous tourist destination, attracting up to 10 million visitors annually.
