Interviewing Exercise
Topic:
There has been a lot of conflict on the issue of immigration into the US and especially through the US southern border. The latest flare-up was with the Haitian refugees, most of who were summarily returned to Haiti. Most of the attention by media and politicians has been on the refugees, border patrol, and policymakers. Not much has been heard from the receiving or destination communities, i.e., the US citizens into whose areas the immigrants would land. You want to know their perspectives, i.e., how they see and make sense of the immigration crisis/conflicts.
Your research question – What are the perspectives of receiving communities in Texas on the immigration crisis at the US Southern Border?
Your sample is Texas residents in border towns and cities. Develop interview questions around this topic. Imagine an interview protocol that will last about 20 minutes.
Procedure:
You will pair up with someone from the class to interview or be interviewed. In addition, there will be a third person present as an observer to give constructive feedback. Decide the roles amongst yourselves.
You will conduct the interview through Zoom breakout rooms. Record responses however you want. The audio recording will give you practice in dealing with the pluses and minuses of using technology in the process but for this assignment taking notes during responses is fine.
Best prepares for this by having an interview protocol including opening and closing. Start preparing before class. In class,Â
you will have about 5 minutes to finalize preparation and agree on who acts in what role
Record the response to each question. These need to be detailed because that is your data for analysis.
