BrazilÂ’s Eco-Tourism Keeps Social Enterprises Successful and Sustainable
Main Message:
According to Brownsdon, “In every region there is opportunity, positivity and
natural beauty” (2013). Where these things intersect, ecotourism can conserve nature
while creating new jobs.
Reflections:
? Brazil was so proactive as to install its educational program for 35,000 students
(Brownsdon, 2013). I find that nations like us, which don’t rely largely on
ecotourism, take for granted the necessity of environmental awareness and
appreciation in formal education.
? It was interesting that they hired former wildlife traffickers to take care of the
animals in wildlife refuges. This reminds me of programs that hire former Taliban
to do public construction projects—both are controversial, but aimed at
rehabilitation. What does the class think about this?
Question(s):
? I imagine that there are limitations to this approach. Do tourists follow the rules?
? What if a lot of people show up when they are only supposed to allow a certain
number of people per day?
? Do they turn paying customers away?

New Carbon Offsetting Schemes Aim to Reduce Emissions and Aid Development
• Main Message:
Recently, “Leading sustainable businesses are reviving their faith in the idea”
(MacErlean, 2013) of carbon offsetting (paying for development projects that reduce
carbon emissions) because it benefits economies and development, particularly in Africa.
The main message should
capture the overall idea
behind the article. This is
also a great place to include
a high quality citation or
quote!
Be sure that your
reflection expresses a
new way of thinking,
applies concepts, and/or
indicates surprising
information.
Challenge your mind to
recognize and question what
you have encountered. You
must have at least one
question, but more are
welcome!
Reflections:
? I was surprised that the UK’s largest insurer, Aviva, had taken on a Kenya carbon
offsetting program amidst its Western success (McErlean, 2013). Many
companies in the West focus on their increased revenue but do not aid external
groups to compete in the global market because they could invest their time
elsewhere. Aviva sets a great example.
? The UN’s past failures were discouraging to so many, but the concept persevered.
Too often, grand schemes are just the beginning and although mistakes are risky,
that should be acknowledged both positively and negatively considering nature’s
balance is at stake.
At least one quality in-text
citation is required for each
of your reading selections.
Since incorporating the
citation into your reflection
section is the easiest, you
might want to start from
there and then challenge
yourself to cite in the main
message section at a later
time.
Question(s):
? Some people criticize these approaches since they donÂ’t really tackle the
companiesÂ’ own supply chain or production processes. Can companies be
incentivized to expand these activities and bring them closer to home (their own
production process)?

emissions and aid development.” Guardian. https://www.theguardian.com/sustainablebusiness/new-carbon-offetting-schemes-emissions-developmen
DonÂ’t forget to include a
full citation for each
article. This is great
practice for your paper!

I. “Effectual Entrepreneurship, Ch. 8”
?This chapter analyzes the notion of effectual entrepreneurship, in which entrepreneurs
use available resources and form strategic partnerships to develop new opportunities.
It indicates the meeting point of effectual and causal thinking styles, giving preference
to the former regarding what you have as an entrepreneur and who you know instead
of setting goals and available resources (Read et al., 2016). Using the examples of
Michael Gerber’s business, the effectual perspective is vividly displayed,
demonstrating how necessity dictates entrepreneurial processes that sometimes can be
effective.
II. “Rippling, Ch. 8”
?Albinia Ruiz’s trip through the initial years of her career as a young engineer to the
point of her being an accomplished waste industry leader is simply amazing. She
wants to successfully tackle the deep-seated issue of garbage in Peru, as many
opposing groups and the old ways would resist, showingher firm spirit for positive
change. Thanks to the understanding that every garbage item has its human meaning,
she restructured waste discards into an asset that created job opportunities and
promoted the health of poor people (Schwartz, 2012). Through her strategy involving
community-based approaches, public campaigns and entrepreneurship, she proves the
effectiveness of grassroots activism in growing and tackling complicated societal
issues. The story of Albina reminds us that in order for real change to be materialized,
one needs courage, unwavering perseverance, and an eye on the future that one wants
to create.
III. Acumen Fund (2018). “What is a Business Model?” New York: Acumen
Fund.
?Acumen Fund article illustrates an idea of a business model, emphasizing its critical
role in the organizationsÂ’ success. Besides, it precisely sketches the key cogs of the
business, such as the value proposition, target market, revenue streams, and cost
structure (2018 Annual Report – Acumen Fund 2018). Then, it proceeds to summarize
how they are connected with sustainability. Combining theory with illustrative
examples like Airbnb and TOMS Shoes, every step breathtakingly demonstrated how
innovative business models can take over an industry in a similar timeframe, leading
to a better society. Furthermore, this important analysis not only helps educate but
also stirs interest in the viewer, thus motivating the audience to think through the
delicate relationships of business innovation and social entrepreneurship, engendering
them for ventures of impact in the commercial and social realms.
Overall Reflection
These readings, taken together, offer insights into both the multiple facets of
entrepreneurship and social impact. This is where flexibility, resourcefulness and
collaboration are vindicated as weaving tools in music to navigate the challenging
business terrain while promoting change. By combining the paradigms of effectual
entrepreneurship, social wave effects, and innovative entrepreneurship, people and
organizations can generate prosperous business operations that not only make a profit
but also may be helpful to society. As I contemplated this reading, I am motivated to
look deeper and seek new avenues for entrepreneurial ventures, as well as think of
ways I can use what I have for the betterment of the world.
