Instructions
Readings: Barbara Fredrickson, ‘Selections from Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel, Think, Do, and Become’ and Andrew Solomon, ‘Son’ (New Humanities Reader)
I would like you to put Fredrickson’s theory to work: can it begin to solve the practical problems
involved in loving each other discussed by Solomon. Both Fredrickson and Solomon suggest that
‘love’ is a far more fraught and difficult process than we would like to imagine.
How can we use Fredrickson’s theory of love as ‘positivity resonance’ to help ease the problems of identity and difference analyzed by Solomon?
Here are some questions to help get you started on the topic. Don’t treat them as a list you can
use for organizing your paper. Instead, use them to begin understanding the prompt, and to formulate your own response based on both texts. Remember, you will need to quote the texts directly.
1. Are there specific areas discussed by Solomon where Fredrickson’s could be of help? Could it
cause more harm? If there are places where it does not apply, does this suggest a limit to the utility of her theory?
2. To what extent is our sense of identity linked to how we have been taught to love and be
loved? Is the clash between vertical and horizontal identities a problem of how we care for each
other? Which author gives a better sense of how we should deal with this problem?
3. For Solomon, the struggle to love each other is also a struggle of accepting difference. How
might Fredrickson’s theory be used (or adapted) in order to facilitate acceptance of difference?
4. How can we reconcile their seemingly very different attitudes to the relationship between parents and children?
